Etheria 2019 has come and gone with our most amazing year YET.

Director/Writer Gigi Saul Guerrero was interviewed by Deadline.com about the 2019 Etheria Feature Film Selection “Culture Shock” from the Blumhouse TV & Hulu horror series Into the Dark, while Entertainment Weekly’s Clark Collis got this great quote from Guerrero “I think it’s everybody’s horror story, at the end of the day, what’s going on today,” said Guerrero, talking about her movie’s topical nature. “I just wanted to speak about it.” The screening at the world famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California was followed by a Q & A with Guerrero and actors Richard Cabral, Martha Higareda, Ian Inigo, Oscar Camacho, Felipe de Lara, Daniel E. Mora, and Barbara Crampton conducted by film programmer Edda Manriquez (Les Femmes International Underground Film Festival). Watch the Q and A on Facebook!

When the evening showcase began, Gale Anne Hurd (“Terminator” trilogy) was awarded the Etheria 2019 Inspiration Award from special guest presenter Roger Corman, who just happens to be Hurd’s mentor. Watch Roger’s Presenting and Gale’s Acceptance Speeches on Facebook!

We were super proud to award Ines de Los Santos with the 2019 Stephanie Rothman Fellowship Award for her pilot “Exorcism 101”. The monetary award was presented by Rebekah McKendry (Shock Waves Podcast, Fellowship founder), Lizz Marshall (2018 recipient) and Stephanie Rothman (fellowship namesake). The short films were followed by a Q and A with Valerie Steinberg (“Hair Wolf”), Trae Harris (“Hair Wolf”), Sarah K. Reimers (“Bitten”), Ivy Liao (“Cupid’s Paradise”), Elaine Mongeon (“Good Morning”), Chelsea Lupkin (“Lucy’s Tale”),Sarah Kalagvano (“Lucy’s Tale”), Andrea Martina (“Cupid’s Paradise”), Jessica Sanders (“End of the Line”), and several other of the films producers conducted by Rebekah McKendry (Shock Waves Podcast). Audience Award ballots were passed out and collected before the Q and A was over, cementing “Good Morning” as the official Audience Award.

Etheria Film Night Proudly Presents the Official 2019 Lineup of Short Films & Inspiration Award Recipient

(Hollywood, CA – May 7, 2019) Etheria Film Night (www.etheriafilmnight.com) is proud to present the 2019 Official Lineup of Shorts on Saturday, June 29. Eight Short Films will be screened at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA followed by a Q&A with directors in attendance conducted by Rebekah McKendry (Blumhouse’s Shock Waves Podcast). The 2019 Inspiration Award will be presented to producer Gale Anne Hurd at the live ceremony by legendary filmmaker Roger Corman. The 2019 Stephanie Rothman Fellowship winner will be announced. Etheria Film Night is the world’s most respected annual showcase of genre films directed by women for an audience including producers, managers, show runners, distributors, and genre fans. Past official selections have included films from directors Axelle Carolyn (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Christine Boylan (The Punisher TV series), Anna Biller (The Love Witch), Amber Benson (SheVenge), Jill Gevargizian (The Stylist), and Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the Cloud).

“I am so excited to show our audience the amazing films we found this year,” says Etheria programmer Heidi Honeycutt of the shorts lineup. “I’m very impressed with what these filmmakers have created and you will be too.”

Etheria’s 2019 Inspiration Award recipient, prolific, award-winning producer Gale Anne Hurd, says “I’m absolutely thrilled to receive the Inspiration Award from the Etheria Film Festival. Growing up as a huge genre fan, I was told over and over that science fiction, fantasy and horror simply wasn’t meant for girls. Luckily I had Roger Corman as my mentor, and he encouraged me to dream big, genre dreams! Those naysayers were dead wrong, but sadly that misconception continues to this day. With women directors accounting for only 4% of the 2018 Top 100 Box Office releases, it’s clear that women aren’t being hired to direct genre films. Etheria showcases the work of women directors who I’m confident will be the future Steven Spielbergs, Jordan Peeles, Kathryn Bigelows and Guillermo Del Toros.”

After graduating from Stanford University with degrees in Economics and Communications, Gale Anne Hurd worked in various capacities for legendary producer Roger Corman’s New World Pictures. In 1984 she produced and co-wrote her first feature film, genre classic The Terminator. She then produced the legendary Academy Award-winning Aliens, followed by Academy Award®-winning films The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Ghost and the Darkness, and Armageddon. In television, she is an Executive Producer of AMC’s The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, the Amazon streaming series Lore, and serves as a Consulting Producer on AMC’s top-rated talk show, Talking Dead. In 2012, Hurd received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She will be present on June 29, 2019 at the 6th annual Etheria Film Night showcase to receive the award in person and will act as a finalist judge of the 2019 Etheria Selections.

Gale Anne Hurd to receive 2019 Etheria Inspiration Award

Etheria Film Night is excited to announce our 2019 Inspiration award recipient: prolific, award-winning producer Gale Anne Hurd! Next she produced the legendary Academy Award-winning Aliens, followed by the Academy Award®-winning films The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Ghost and the Darkness, and Armageddon. In television, she is an Executive Producer of AMC’s The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, the Amazon streaming series Lore, and serves as a Consulting Producer on Talking Dead. In 2012, Hurd received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She will be present on June 29, 2019 at the 6th annual Etheria Film Night showcase to receive the award in person and will act as a finalist judge of the 2019 Etheria Selections.

Hurd has also produced three PBS documentaries, including True Whispers: The Story of the Navajo Code Talkers and Choctaw Code Talkers. Her latest Native American documentary, MANKILLER, the story of Wilma Mankiller, the first woman Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation has screened in over 30 film festivals around the world, and won ‘Best of Fest’ at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, ‘Best Editing’ at the United Nations Association Film Festival, the ‘Spirit’ Award at the Bozeman International Festival (out of 300 documentary and feature submissions), and ‘Best Documentary Feature’ at the Maoriland, Rome International and Tulsa American Film Festivals. MANKILLER aired nationally on PBS in March 2018.

In addition to widely-known Hollywood blockbusters, like Armageddon and Ang Lee’s The Hulk, Hurd also produces dramatic films, such as The Waterdance, which won the Sundance Audience Award and Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, as well as Safe Passage, starring Susan Sarandon and Sam Shepard, which was honored with the Beatrice Wood Film Award for Artistry in Film. In addition, she produced the Watergate satire, Dick, which starred Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams.

Previously, Hurd was elected by the Producers Branch to serve on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and her additional Board positions include the American Film Institute, Women In Film, the Caucus of Producers, Writers and Directors, and she served as an Officer and Board Member for the Producers Guild of America for over twenty years. An active environmentalist, Hurd has served on the national Boards of The Ocean Conservancy, the International Seakeepers Society, the Waterkeeper Alliance, Reef Check, and the Coral Reef Research Foundation.

In 2015, Hurd was awarded the prestigious David O. Selznick Award for Achievement in Motion Pictures by the Producers Guild of America, joining such past honorees as Clint Eastwood, Kathleen Kennedy, and Steven Spielberg. She is also the recipient of the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre ‘Glory to the Filmmaker’ Award from the Los Angeles Festival. In 2013, she accepted the Cartier Award at the Deauville American Film Festival and was the recipient of the DiGamma Kappa Award for Distinguished Service in Broadcasting from Grady College at the University of Georgia, home of the Peabody Awards. The Green Cross honored Hurd with their ‘Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership’ Award.

Jackie Kong was awarded the 2016 Etheria Inspiration Award for being an amazing genre director.

The 2016 Etheria Jury Award went to Jill Gevargizian’s horror short THE STYLIST. THE STYLIST also took home the 2016 Audience Award, followed closely by Mindy Bledsoe’s dark comedy HARD BROADS in second place.

Olga Osorio’s science fiction time-travel tale RESTART was awarded the ISA STORY AWARD for best narrative.

Toy Lei’s thrilling action short BOXER won the Artemis Award for Best Action.

Well, Etheria Film Night 2015 is a wrap!

Etheria Film Night 2015 – that’s a wrap!

We can’t believe another event has passed. We spend all year working on making Etheria Film Night 2015 at the Egyptian Theatre what it is – and we couldn’t do it without the staff at the Egyptian Theatre, the volunteers, the press, the sponsors, the community partners, the attendees, and, of course, the filmmakers Ursula Dabrowsky, Chloe Okuno, Mara Tasker, Martha Goddard, Gigi Guerrero, Amber Benson, Axelle Carolyn, Arantxa Echevarria, and Karen Gillan.

Arantxa Echevarria’s DE NOCHE Y DE PRONTO took home the Jury Award for Best Short Film, while Chloe Okuno’s SLUT won the Audience Award. CONGRATS!

I can’t express our gratitude – your time, energy, enjoyment, and support are what makes this event happen. We do this because the films, the filmmakers, and the fans are important to us, and when you support us, it means the world to us. Etheria Film Night 2015 Announces Official Short Film Selections!

We just can’t hold it in any longer!

We are so excited to announce the official lineup of short films for the June 13, 2015 event at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California! The North American Premiere of the Australian feature-length horror film “Inner Demon” directed by Ursula Dabrowsky will be followed by six official short selections:

“Sheila Scorned” – directed by Mara Gasbarro Tasker
(USA, Action/Thriller, 18 min)

Sheila Scorned follows the violent misadventures of Sheila Johnson, a jaded and quick tongued dancer at a gentleman’s club. One night, after noticing an old flame in the crowd, Sheila seduces her ex, Charlie…and kills him. But her plans to get home are interrupted when Charlie’s tie to a local gang of misfits comes back to bite her. Now abducted and trapped in a warehouse, Sheila has to fight her way free from their violent and sexual advances. Unluckily for the men, Sheila’s got a penchant for ass kicking.

“Shevenge” – directed by Amber Benson
(USA, Fantasy/Action/Comedy, 11 ½ min)

From Amber Benson (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) comes this twisted, darkly comedic, genre-bending tale of revenge – a revenge of the worst kind – Shevenge! The film follows Sam, Taylor and Charley as they embark on a journey of revenge and empowerment. While at a killer slumber party, these three best friends drink wine, paint their nails, and pay back their crappy boyfriends as they discover their deepest fantasies and take you along for the ride.

“El Gigante” – Directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero
(Canada/Mexico, Horror, 13 ½ min)

After attempting to cross the US/Mexico border in search of a better life, Armando awakens in an unknown room, his body broken down and a Lucha Libre mask sewn into his neck. He attempts to escape, but is surrounded by a sadistic family, who watch him with hungry eyes. The only chance for Armando’s survival in this hellish nightmare is to last in a wrestling match against the most terrifying villain of all: GIGANTE!

“Göde l Incomplete” – directed by Martha Goddard
(Australia, Science Fiction, 13 ½ min)

A time-travel love-story between one of the great minds of the 20th century, Kurt Gödel, and a lonely particle physicist, Serita Cedric, a research student working at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Their affair becomes the trigger for his theory on time as one event feeds into the next and it becomes impossible to tell which came first.

“De noche y de pronto” – directed by Arantxa Echevarria

Home alone in a deserted apartment building during the Christmas season, Maria is startled to receive a visit from a desperate man claiming to be her upstairs neighbor who says his apartment has been broken into by thieves.

A dark, coming of age thriller about a 16-year-old misfit named Maddy who lives alone with her grandmother in a small town in Texas. When Maddy crosses paths with an older, charismatic Stranger- a fellow misfit who’s passing through town- her quiet, monotonous life takes a dangerous turn.

The short film screening will be followed by a Q&A with directors in attendance, and TV writer and producer Jane Espenson (“Husbands”, “Once Upon a Time”, “Battlestar Galactica”, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) will receive the 2015 Inspiration Award for her work in some of the most beloved genre TV series of all time.

Etheria Film Night 2015 is co-presented by the American Cinematheque and will take place at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on June 13th, 2015. Jane Espenson to receive Etheria Film Night 2015 Inspiration Award

Prolific TV writer and producer Jane Espenson (Husbands, Once Upon a Time, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will receive the 2015 Inspiration Award from Etheria Film Night on June 13 in a ceremony at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California. Espenson was selected as the 2015 honoree for her work in some of the most beloved genre TV series of all time and for inspiring emerging women filmmakers to write and create their own genre projects.

“I’m thrilled to be honored as part of Etheria Film Night,” says Espenson, currently an executive producer on the fantasy series Once Upon a Time. “In the genre spirit of ‘Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations,’ I’m proud to be recognized by a group that encourages all kinds of people to follow their creative passions.”

“As a fan of science fiction and fantasy drama TV, whenever I hear of a new show with Jane Espenson’s name attached I’m instantly excited because I KNOW I’m going to love it and I’m not alone in this feeling,” says Festival Director Stacy Hammon.

“Jane Espenson’s body of work is so impressive,” adds Heidi Honeycutt, Etheria Film Night Director of Programming. “Once Upon a Time, Caprica, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Dollhouse, Buffy… the list goes on and on. She’s an amazing force in genre television.”

Espenson will receive the 2015 Inspiration Award onstage during the Etheria Film Night June 13 annual showcase of the best new short genre films (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, action, and thriller) directed by women. The festival’s goal is to prove to the entertainment industry that there are women filmmakers making fantastic genre films, and that they deserve to be recognized.

Etheria Film Night is open for rolling submissions all year long, but to be considered for the 2015 lineup, films must be received before March 31st, 2015. Filmmakers can submit online for free at etheriafilmnight.com/submissions.

Etheria Film Night 2015 will take place at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California on June 13, 2015. The event is hosted by American Cinematheque, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting all forms of films through screenings at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. 2015 sponsors and partners include Digital Bolex, Monstrosity Films, Tangerine Entertainment, Fangoria Magazine, All Things Horror, Horrible Imaginings Film Festival, Darling Nikki’s, Birns and Sawyer, and The Alliance of Women Directors.
